The Fort of Exilles houses two permanent museum areas and offers two guided visitor routes enriched by theatrical sets of great evocative impact conceived by the artist Richi Ferrero.

From the Cavalry Courtyard the path descends the Mule Ramp that leads to the Stables and then very steep steps lead from here to the Lower Fort. Then along the Great Ditch over which the imposing Royal Battery looms, the Fort's main front of fire, and from the small Caponier in the centre of the Ditch up the so-called 'Paradise' steps, hewn straight from the rock, and into the Prison Courtyard from where a narrow corridor leads to the dark damp cells. The ascent to the Courtyard ends with a circular route that reveals the various levels of the complex building. Various shadows appear on the walls along the route, like ghosts, to represent the soldiers, stirring intense feelings in the visitor. Looking through the peephole of three solitary confinement cells, from the barred door, two eyes appear on the dark dirty back wall looking nostalgically at us with infinite pain. Glances as details, as spirits of those shadows. There are seven stations along the route to pause and listen to an audio system that narrates the relevant information with specially composed background sounds.
